The Full Moon
The Full Moon is special to anyone who works with natural energy. A lot of people only do their ceremonies and rituals during full moons. That’s because lunar power is at it’s highest when the moon is brightest. It’s so powerful that it even effects our sleep. According to a paper published in 2021, pretty much everyone (From indigenous communities in South America to college students in urban Seattle.) goes to sleep later and sleeps less on the days leading up to a full moon. The Full Moon is powerful. We all can feel it, even if we’re not aware of it yet. So this ceremony is a little different. The corresponding element is Fire and there is going to be feasting and dancing. A proper celebration, reveling in the full intensity of Luna’s energy.
For this ceremony you are going to need to make or buy decadent food of your choice to eat. Something that makes you feel like you’re treating yourself. This is going to be your feast and a part of this ceremony’s invocation. The theme is light/dark and the element of fire, so food that has to be cooked with heat, or is white and black in color would be best. Ultimately, choose whatever you like that feels decadent and tastes delicious. Prepare it ahead of time so that it’s ready when you are setting up your temple.
I also recommend making a playlist or picking out some specific music to dance to. Whatever gets you up and moving and evokes feelings of reverence and celebration. I like music that is instrumental and heavy on drums. Music that evokes the feeling of an ancient shaman dancing and drumming around a fire under the light of a full moon.
Prepare the Temple
Clean the space you are going to use for the ceremony and place your altar or table in the center. Place the incense in the East, place the red candle in the South, place the blue candle in the West, and place the black or brown candle (We use a pink Himalayan salt tealight candle holder with tealight candles) in the North. Place candle w/ sigil, purple candle, food, and tarot deck on the altar.
We usually also bring out a few extra candles and set them up around the temple and turn off all of our electric lighting. This works well for us because we have a wood burning fireplace, lots of safe candle holders, and space to do this safely while we dance.
Whenever you work with fire, even small candles, safety is incredibly important. Fire is powerful and dangerous. So be sure to setup your candles using the best fire safety precautions and be mindful while you dance. You may need to move your altar and possibly other small furniture from their usual place for this ceremony. And that’s perfectly fine, safety and practicality are always of primary importance. We move our coffee table and move our altar to the edge of the room to clear up maximum floor space for dancing.
Prepare Yourself
Now that your temple is prepared it’s time for the ritual bath. Remember the intent is to relax and let your worries and distractions wash away so that your body and mind are clean and pure for the ceremony. Use whatever salts, oils, or soaps you like and enjoy yourself but don’t take too long. You have work to do. When you’re done, dry off, and put on whatever clothing you feel comfortable meeting the sacred in.
Closing the Circle
Refer to my post on the Circle of Praise for the instructions and corresponding imagery and symbols.
- Light the incense representing the element of air as you recite the words for the East and visualize yellow light lighting up the Eastern quadrant of the space and extending outwards.
- Light the red candle while you recite the words for the South and visualize red light lighting up the South quadrant of the space and extending outwards.
- Light the blue candle while you recite the words for the West and visualize blue light lighting up the Western quadrant and extending outwards.
- Light the black/brown/salt candle while you recite the words the for North and visualize brown light lighting up the North quadrant and extending outwards.
- Light the purple candle while you recite the words for Sister Luna and visualize grey light extending downward.
- Visualize white light extending upwards while reciting the words for Brother Sol.
Sacred Dance
Now that you’ve closed your circle and are ready to start the festivities, it is time to light your sigil candle/s which should be on your altar and begin the dance. Put on your music and dance for 10-15 minutes. Bring your awareness into your body and breath and surrender to the beat of the music. Don’t talk, don’t worry about how you look, focus on how you feel and raise your energy as your drop your judgmental and narrative mind. Just remember to be mindful of any candles. This is a time for celebration so make sure to have fun.
Invocation
After the dance, it is time for our feast. Take a seat by your altar and your chosen food and recite:
We call upon the spirit of fire and the power of Luna to cleanse and invigorate us. This food represents the element of fire and the balance between light and darkness, exemplified by the light and dark sides of the moon. Let us be filled with their divine energy. We give thanks to our sister Luna for providing light in the darkness, for her protection, and for the balance that she brings.
Then, proceed to eat.

Sigil Magic
During the New Moon Ceremony we created our sigil for this cycle and carved it into a candle. We crystalized the energy of the ceremony and our intention into this object and at the First Quarter Moon we nourished that energy and intention using the power of the waxing moon. This ceremony we raised a lot of energy through dancing and feasting while our carved and anointed candles burned and added that to the energy we have been raising for our intention for the lunar cycle.
By this point our candles are usually mostly or completely used up, but if you have any left, or not, put it out and save it, or the remains/candle holder, for the last ceremony.
Opening the Circle
Refer back to the Circle of Praise for instructions. This time put out each respective candle as you go through it ending with the purple candle and anointed candle on the altar. Take a moment of gratitude and end the ceremony.
