Spiritual Practices Lunar Invocation

Lunar Invocation

(A performative prayer inspired by St. Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun and starting with an excerpt from it. Followed by a sacral opening yoga flow, a lunar/water based meditation, another round of the sacral yoga flow, and ending with a moment of gratitude. This is a powerful and centering prayer that I created to balance out my Solar Invocation and Prophet’s Prayer to round out my days with a set of three very intentional and powerful prayers. Making this a daily practice would be a solid foundation, or addition, for any spiritual/personal development you want to pursue.

These three together will serve to awaken, align, and balance your whole body and mind. They will help you attune yourself so that your soul, your Higher Self, can shine.

This practice will serve to align you not only internally, but externally, with your surroundings and the universe we are a part of. It will build a feeling of gratitude for the light, comfort, and balance that the moon brings, and enlighten us with its example. The moon is another thing most people take for granted. But we are capable of harnessing it to fill us with joy and peace. And, as always, this won’t just benefit you. This will bless everyone around you.)

Invocatio Lunae

Opening

Turn towards the moon, or to the West.  Place your hands, palms together, at your heart.  Then, raise your hands and head up. Recite:

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful.

I give thanks to my sister, Luna  For her light and comfort,  and the balance which she brings.

Sacral Yoga Flow

Breath in deeply, raising your arms up over your head.

Exhale and fold forward, keeping the spine long, and place your hands down in front of your feet or on your shins.

Breath in and lift your chest up and forward to a flat back.

Exhale and fold forward again placing your hands down.

Inhale and step your feet back into a plank position.

Exhale while slowly lowering your chest back and down into child’s pose.

Inhale, and slowly roll forward, bringing your hips down and your chest up into upward dog with your hips open. Rock side to side gently.

Exhale and roll up and back into child’s pose again.

Inhale and come up to plank.

Exhale and step forward into forward fold.

Inhale and lift your chest up and forward to a flat back.

Exhale and fold forward, then bend your knees.

Inhale, and come up to standing.

Repeat this three times. Bringing your focus entirely into your breath and body, and feeling the ebb and flow of the universes within and without.

Meditation

Find a comfortable seated position for meditation. Take three deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth, letting your body relax more deeply with each exhale. Then, take a few minutes to just pay gentle attention to your breath. Don’t try to control it, just observe.

Close your eyes, and picture a dark lake at night. The water is calm and reflective, just like your mind at this moment, and you’re standing on the shore. The water is gently lapping at your feet. The silhouettes of trees line the shore. The sky is clear, and the moon and the stars are shining brightly against the blackness of night.

The calm surface of the water is reflecting the light of the moon, just as the moon reflects the light of the sun. A reminder that, even in the darkest hour, the great source of light and life is ever present. Contemplate upon this while exploring the visualization.

Strive to keep your own mind calm and reflective like the water and the moon, so that you too can reflect the glory of the Father of Lights.

Sacral Yoga Flow

Perform three more repetitions of the sacral Yoga Flow above. Then stand with your eyes closed and your hands, palms together, in front of your heart. Take a moment of gratitude and observe the state of your mind and body.
